Statement Regarding Shamus Award Comments
The Bouchercon Board of Directors are aware of the situation that occurred at the Shamus Awards this year. While the Shamus Awards are generally presented during the same weekend, and in the same city, that Bouchercon is held, the two are not affiliated.
Bouchercon is committed to welcoming everyone and ensuring that our event is an open, welcoming space for all attendees. Our official harassment and inclusion statement makes this explicitly clear: ” We view harassment as behavior that threatens, alarms, or makes someone uncomfortable. Examples may include but aren’t limited to: Verbal or written comments of a sexual or violent nature, unwanted physical contact, ethnic slurs, recording or photographing without consent, following or stalking, and coercion of any kind.”
“Fill a hotel with few thousand socially-challenged introverts, folks for whom the ‘I’d rather be reading’ T-shirt was created, and force them to spend a long autumn weekend together, and what have you got? Bouchercon—and you’d be a fool to miss it.”
